Hair Extensions – Is It Worth It?! My Experience + Before & After

Hair extensions have become super popular in the last few years, right? Is it safe and healthy for your hair to use them? Get ready girl! I am about to tell you about my personal experience with it.

We chose to go for the Brazilian knots: applied strand-by-strand, the raw un-tipped hair is tied with a string around the hair shaft at the scalp. No stress to your natural hair because it does not use any heat, bonds, braids or cylinders.

I did it with Izabel the owner of Izabel Hair & Beauty salon in Northwest London. Izabel was recommended to me by a friend who also did her extensions there and I must say that she is an incredibly detailed and immaculate professional with vast experience.

The reason I decided to go dark and have hair extensions was because I had been dreaming of having thick, long and healthy hair for the longest time. So, I decided to go for it and here are some tips:

Before “doing it”:

To ensure that your experience with extensions is above all positive, it is important to do some research beforehand: before choosing the salon where you want to do them, talk to friends and people who have already done it and ask for some references. Having chosen the salon – preferably one with plenty of experience in terms of extensions – go there before making the appointment and take the opportunity to ask some questions.

First, the stylist should examine your hair, ensuring that you are able to receive and maintain the extensions. In addition, the stylist should also advise you in terms of the type of extension and which method is most appropriate for your hair.

Inquire about the maintenance plan for them (how many sessions and which products to buy for washing and drying). Know exactly how much it is going to cost you and if the price includes maintenance sessions and/or removal.

My Thoughts:

The adjustment was easy, the first night I had a little discomfort sleeping but nothing “crazy”. Something to bear in mind: there will be a lot of itching and this was something I wasn’t aware of beforehand so, there you go sister – that’s definitely something to bear in mind.

In my opinion hair extensions are excellent if you have done lots of bleaching to your hair and want to hide the lack of volume, or just to change your look temporarily.

Things to keep in mind:

However, if our “normal” hair already requires special attention to look healthy, the extensions are no exception. To ensure the perfect look between maintenance, there are some basic recommendations:

-Use a soft bristle brush, brushing with very delicate movements, especially near the root, at least twice a day.

-Avoid using dryers and flat irons as much as possible, the more heat you apply to the extensions the less time they will last – it is preferable to let them dry naturally. If using such equipment, keep a distance of at least 15 cm between the heat source and the extensions.

-Wet the extensions gradually – too much water at the same time can “swell” and clog the extensions, which can lead to their detachment. Wash hair from top to bottom with gentle movements.
